Wood is not just processed into sawn planks and beams. Often, it is first processed into wood-based products, such as paper, fiberboard, plywood, veneer, etc. These products often contain several types of wood, but are more difficult to identify. Such products often contain more than one type of wood, making them more difficult to identify. This is where misidentifications are most common, and false species declarations in the timber trade are most difficult to disprove. 
 
In view of these problems, the second important aspect of ENFORCE is to conduct research into the identification of species in wood products, so that routine analyses can be carried out in this area too. New identification techniques such as DART-TOMFS spectrometry hold great promise for wood species identification worldwide. New reference databases should also be created for this purpose.
