We use charcoal from Namibia for the barbecue

Belgium has already relied for a while on imports of charcoal from the rest of the world for summer barbecues. Back in 2018, the WWF commissioned an analysis which revealed that many bags did not state their origin and that half contained either exclusively or partly tropical timber.

Apache, the online news site for investigative journalism, has now commissioned a new analysis of several major supermarkets and DIY stores that sell charcoal. What has emerged? It is clear from both the claims printed on the packets and the wood identification that we are now importing large quantities of charcoal from Namibia. The narrative is that this is a good thing for combating ‘bush encroachment’ in Namibia. But the reality is not quite so simple.
